Beginning MS Spanish
Quarter 1, 2011-2012
Description: Beginning level middle school Spanish. Students will learn about family, descriptions, weather, months, days of the week, seasons, telling time, clothing emotions and rooms of the house.
Books: Avancemos A, Patricia va a California
Grading: Students will be graded on participation (50%); homework, classwork and quizzes(30%); projects, and tests (20%).
Homework: Students are expected to be prepared for the lesson; full-points (20) will be given for all completed work turned in on-time or as students return from an absence. No late work will be awarded points.
Students have options with their homework (unless otherwise noted):
- Worksheet (either given in class or on RenWeb/web documents),
- Quia. www.quia.com/web
- Zondle games www.zondle.com (parent signature sheet-available in Web Documents in RenWeb),
- Retell the story/mini-cuento to an adult (parent signature sheets),
- Write out the story/mini-cuento,
- Draw the story,
- Add self/ change character or ending to story,
- Write a new story.
- Write a song for the story/mini-cuento.

There will also be one assignment per week that helps students prepare for the final project these will be indicated in the syllabus with double asterisks (**).
Students will also have some reading from Patricia va a California.
Final Project: Students will be preparing a final project consisting of three elements, an oral presentation, a written report and a family tree display. These will make up most of their test/project score in this class, 20% of their final grade. Rubrics for these are available and are also posted in Web Documents area of RenWeb.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given in class, some may be unannounced, some may be given via Quia.

Week 1: Introductions, greetings and family.
Week 2: Camping
Week 3: Seasons, weather and brief introduction of clothing. Chapter 1 of Patricia va a California.
Week 4: Months of year, days of week, numbers, telling time, classes and school. Chapter 2 of Patricia va a California.
**Homework: Write one paragraph answering, “Who is in my family.”**
**Write school schedule**
Week 5: Gustar, hobbies, and junk food. Chapters 3 & 4 of Patricia va a California.
**Homework: Write one paragraph answering, “What does my family like to do together.”**
Week 6: Ser, adjectives, review of introductions and family. Chapters 5 & 6 of Patricia va a California.
**Homework: Write one paragraph describing yourself and another describing your family**
Week 7: Estar, emotions, review of adjectives, classes and school. Chapters 7 & 8 of Patricia va a California.
**Rough drafts due**
Week 8: Parts of a house. Chapters 9 & 10 of Patricia va a California.
**Students draw and label floor plan for their house.**
Week 9: **Presentations!!!**
